How to gauge attitude during interview

Employers may find that finding the best talent can be difficult. Effective hiring requires that you assess a candidate's attitude as well as their skills and experiences. Even if an employee does their job well, a negative attitude can cause problems for the entire department or team.

Employers will notice a positive attitude and a willingness to do anything for the company. It can be difficult to spot whiners during interviews. You may be fooled into believing they are a team player by their cheery façade.

These are some interview questions that you should ask.

Describe the biggest obstacle that you encountered while working. What were your solutions?

A candidate who has a positive attitude sees obstacles as temporary and something that can be overcome.

How can you deal with situations where you are asked to do more than you can?

A person with a positive outlook embraces changes and doesn’t mind being pushed outside of their comfort zone.

Please tell me about a time when you created a problem within your department or team. What was your solution?

Questions that ask candidates how they relate to others in difficult situations are often a good indicator of their true attitude. You should look for answers that demonstrate the candidate’s ability to manage conflict professionally and effectively.

What have you done to help someone do the job, even if it is not convenient for you?

Candidates who have a positive attitude and a willingness to do anything for others will be more than happy to assist a customer, colleague, or supervisor. Consider it a red flag if the candidate is unable to give even one example.

Now it’s time for the big question: The COVID-19 pandemic. Candidates with positive attitudes will be able to draw something positive out of their experience with the coronavirus. It changed our lives, maybe forever. These are some interview questions that you can ask candidates to help you discover a positive attitude.

What was your experience during the pandemic and how did it help you to expand your horizons?

We all have time, whether we like it or not. What did the candidate do with their time? Did they acquire a new skill? Do you want to write a book? Get a degree? Positive people will be able to persevere even in the most difficult times.

What did you do to help others?

You should look for answers that show you how the employee’s positive attitude extends beyond themselves. A person who is willing to help their family and friends during the pandemic can make a great team member.

How did you adapt to working remotely during the pandemic

People who have a positive attitude and can do anything will be able to handle unexpected situations. Look for answers that demonstrate resilience and the ability to be proactive. Perhaps the candidate transformed their closet into a workspace or set up “office hours” to help them manage their time better.

How has the pandemic affected your career goals?

Did the candidate give up on their career and just stay in the trenches? Did they take the time to learn by watching videos, reading books, or taking online classes? Is there one thing that has made a difference in their work outlook since the pandemic? A person with a positive attitude will find a way to remain engaged in their job.

Why did you leave your job?

Because the job market was unstable, many unhappy workers chose to stay with the company they worked for. Many are now quitting their jobs in what is being called “The Great Resignation”. Find out if your candidate is running for their dream job or escaping a bad job match. Candidates with a positive attitude will not only be able to explain why they are leaving their employer, but also why they want to join you.

Empathy is perhaps the most important tip in interviewing. You will never know what someone went through during the pandemic unless they share it with you.

Even if the answers are not what you expected, be respectful. A candidate who is compassionate and positive towards others could be a great addition to your team.
